Former FBI head James Comey has entered an innocent plea to making false statements to congressional representatives and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

Mr Comey's attorney filed the plea representing him in a national courtroom in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would try to have the case dismissed for several reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was indicted just days after the former president urged his attorney general to take action against him.

Judicial Process

During the hearing on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald advised the judge they intended to present multiple motions to dismiss the case before a court case, claiming the government's case was retaliatory and that a government lawyer was unlawfully appointed to take over the case.

The former director's proceedings was initially managed by the original attorney, who resigned under influence from Trump after his examination into another opponent - NY AG Letitia James - did not succeed to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director seemed in optimistic frame of mind as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and sharing humor. He was supported by his wife, Patrice Failor and offspring Maureen, a government attorney who the Trump administration dismissed.

Upon hearing to the court state his constitutional guarantees and the dual charges against him in the courtroom on mid-week, the defendant was asked if he understood the charges.

"I do your honour. Thank you," he informed the judge.

Background Context

The former director was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about four months into the former president's initial presidency as commander-in-chief. At the period, he was directing an investigation into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between the Russian government and the presidential campaign.

During his tenure, Mr Comey caused a backlash from Democrats when he announced just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Legal actions against Clinton were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from conservative politicians as well.

Ongoing Accusations

The federal government assert the former director provided false information to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being interrogated about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They allege he provided false information to the legislative body by stating he had not approved an individual at the FBI to disclose to media organizations information about the agency probes.

Government lawyers also allege James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to influence, block and slow" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Individual Responses

Via social media James Comey published to his social media after he was indicted, he stated he was wrongly accused and accused Donald Trump of behaving like a "tyrant".

"We have understood for a long time that there are costs to opposing the former president," he commented. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Thus initiate a legal proceeding."

The accusations against Mr Comey surfaced after Trump posted on social media insisting on his top legal official, Ms Bondi, prosecute the former director and others.
