The Monarch Officially Removes Andrew of HRH Style and Princely Dignity
Through a definitive move, the reigning monarch has formally removed Andrew Mountbatten Windsor of his HRH style and his title of prince.
These alterations were made official by issuing royal documents under the Great Seal of the Realm, which were published in the Gazette.
The official notice stated: âThe king has been pleased by royal instruments under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall cease to be entitled to hold and enjoy the designation of âHRHâ and the titular dignity of âPrince of the realmâ.â
A separate entry confirmed the removal of the dukedom from the roll of peerage, with immediate effect.
It read: âHis Majesty has been pleased to direct by royal warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his secretary of state to cause the Duke of York to be removed from the roll of the peerage.â
Context of the Decision
The move follows mounting scrutiny over the former prince's connections to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, including the posthumous publication of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.
Giuffre alleged that she was sexually abused by the former prince after being brought by Jeffrey Epstein, claims that Andrew has always denied.
Mechanism of Title Removal
Charles employed his monarchical powersârecognized rights held by the monarchâfollowing discussions with Cabinet Office officials, instead of through legislative action.
Royal instruments and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to bestow or remove honors and styles.
Since the HRH style is conferred by such documents, it can be revoked through the same process.
Further Measures and Support
After the initial announcement, the lord chancellor was directed to draft the necessary documents for the removal of titles.
This action also includes Andrew giving up his tenancy on his Windsor residence, a 30-room royal property where he has lived for twenty years.
The government fully supported the king's move.
Retained Honor
In spite of the loss of titles, it was announced that Andrew will keep his South Atlantic medal, granted for his role as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
